Bring out your inner explorer

KLOOFENDAL - Friends of Kloofendal Nature Reserve brings out the best in Northside’s adventure seekers.

Just because it’s getting colder doesn’t mean one has to stay indoors. To prove this, the Friends of Kloofendal Nature Reserve (Frok) has once again planned a number of exciting events to help shake off those winter blues this April.

Since the beginning of the month there has been a variety of excursions which have been enjoyed by nature loving people including hiking and learning about different animals and insects. It was followed by an inspiring event for ornithology enthusiasts where they learned about birds in detailed. They were also though by a butterfly expert Grant Egen. The Frok is inviting Northsiders to volunteer and help to hack away the invasive plants in the reserve on 12 April from 8.30am to 11am. Project organiser, Jurgen Hammerstöm, has been organising these “hack” days since 2010, on every second Saturday of every month.

Further more, on the same day, mining history expert Ann Kelham will be taking children on a gold-mining history adventure at R80 per child. This is a tour of the olden day gold mines found in the reserve and they are what is left of the original mines created by Roodepoort founders Fred and Harry Struben when they were the first men to strike gold in the area in 1884.

Ornithologists can spend the morning bird watching with birding expert Grant Egen on 13 April from 7am to 9am. Entrance is R60 for adults, R50 for pensioners and R40 for children. Adventure seekers are advised to wear sturdy takkies, sunscreen and also to bring some of their own refreshments.
