E-toll bill for vehicle with no gearbox

Vehicle stationary for five years gets billed.

A resident, Ben Barnard from Lindhaven visited the Record’s offices on 25 March with an interesting e-toll statement that he received in the mail the week before.

The e-toll bill for R135 does not indicate which gantries he has passed. In addition the bill is for a vehicle of his that he applied to have scrapped months ago because it is no longer in working condition and is not worth the amount required to try and fix it.

The vehicle in question, a Volkswagen Minibus, has been standing in his back yard for the past five years. It has no gearbox, no wheels and therefore it is by no means roadworthy.

Barnard showed the Record photos he took with his phone that prove that the vehicle is beyond repair and a wreck, for the lack of a better description.

Barnard went to the Westgate e-toll centre to complain, but the person who helped him could not explain it either, saying that the only reason for the mistake could be that there is another vehicle on the road with a duplicated number plate.

Barnard was given a form to fill out to dispute the bill and is now awaiting the outcome.
