Power box dangers

WELTEVREDEN PARK - Open power box poses dangerous threat to children

Residents and the local councillor of Weltevreden Park are concerned about the safety of the community because of a opened power box in J.G Strydom Road next to Palm Court Shopping Centre. One of the residents, Andre Schoeman said the power box has been left opened since 11 March.

“The main problem is the vagrants that sleep behind the power box and tamper with it during the night,” explained Schoeman.

Mike Tonkin, the ward 126 councillor said the voltage meters can be adjusted and he is concerned that it will have a negative effect on the power supplied to the shopping centre from this opened power box.

Tonkin said, “My main concern is for the safety of the children and vagrants because a single touch to those cables can mean instant death, and this is something that City Power needs to look at.”

He further argued that the power boxes are supposed to have City Power locks on them but this power box does not have a lock.

The councillor concluded by saying that he has spoken to the entity about the issue but “nothing has been done to rectify the matter yet.” City Power did not respond at the time of going to print.
