Wilro Lions treat Gateway Village to makeover

Wilro Lions were able to give bedrooms at Gateway Village a makeover thanks to a generous donation.

On Saturday 8 March the Lions Club of Wilro Park brought fun and a makeover to the residents of Gateway Village.

As explained by Roleen Hunter, the service Chairperson of the club, they collaborated with pupils from Lantern School and brought a morning of fun and games to Gateway. Each resident was teamed up with a volunteer for games, including Bingo and sokkie hockey. Most of the pupils who volunteered on Saturday form part of their schools’ Representative Council of Learners (RCL) and attended under supervision of Desiré Mare.

“The pupils were apprehensive at first but soon joined in and realised afterwards how very privileged they are,” Desiré said.

Roleen said that the programme on Saturday might yield even more positive results in future, as some pupils are keen to return and help out on a regular basis.

The Lions also were enabled to give Gateway Village a makeover after the Mannheim-Rosengarten Lions Club in Germany donated money to them. Residents of Johnson House B at Gateway Village were pleased as the Lions completed the makeover of four-men’s bedrooms.

“The money that was donated enabled us to overhaul the bedrooms completely,” Roleen told the Record. She explained that the bedrooms were given a fresh coat of paint and that they bought new beds and linen. They also installed new sets of drawers and proper shelving, and new pictures were hanged on the walls.

“A lot of time and effort went into this worthwhile project, and the eight men that benefitted from it were thrilled with the results,” Club President Marian Ceronio-Duxbury said.
