Premier launches solar power schools

Goodbye load shedding, hallo solar power for two JHB schools.

The Premier of Gauteng, Nomvula Mokonyana announced that two new solar powered schools were to be launched in Johannesburg on 13 March.

Noordwyk and Northriding Secondary Schools feature 55m x 15m solar farms, which are set to minimise electricity costs and reduce dependency on the grid.

The Department of Infrastructure Development over the last 18 months has pioneered ‘green schools’, which have incorporated rainwater harvesting, solar water heating and sewer treatment plants into the design in support of Gauteng’s Green Agenda.

“The Green Agenda will drive energy efficiency and the use of renewable and clean energy sources thus reducing the Provincial Government’s carbon footprint,” MEC for Infrastructure Development, Qedani Mahlangu said.

The Premier will be joined by Mahlangu and MEC for Education, Barbara Creecy on an interactive tour of Northriding and Noordwyk Secondary Schools.
