Old infrastructure unable to handle load

WELTEVREDEN PARK - Plastic pipe replacements baffle local councillor

Weltevreden Park has been plagued by burst water pipes on a monthly basis for the past year.

The most recent incident occurred on Wonderboom Avenue.

Resident Ignus van Rensburg said, “The water entity impressed me with their efficiency as they repaired the burst within hours.” However, he was disappointed that the entity had left the pipes exposed.

Ward 126 councillor Mike Tonkin explained that the outdated infrastructure could not handle the current water supply loads and as a result the pipes were bursting on a regular basis.

“The main contributor to the recurring issues is that Johannesburg Water workers only replace the pipes that are leaking and they are attaching these new pipes to the older pipes,” he said. “The older pipes were a concrete type of pipe and they are replacing these with plastic ones due to the cost of concrete pipes.”

Details: Ward 126 councillor Mike Tonkin 082 564 0160.
