ANC Zone 5 condemns Klein Helderkruin incident

Councillor acted outside her scope, says ANC

It seems the dust has not settled yet after the incident on 10 February at Klein Helderkruin Old Age Home in which DA Councillor Suzanne Clarke was involved.

It is alleged that Clarke attempted, in the presence of JMPD, SAPS and a Housing official, to “evict” illegal tenants at the old age home.

The ANC now has added its voice in criticism of the event.

“The councillor’s high-handedness was totally unnecessary,” says Raymond Martin, member of the Zone 5 ANC communications team.

“It is a sad day indeed when our elderly people are subject to the kind of tactics that the Councillor exposed them to. There’s definitely no way that the elderly family could have posed such a serious threat that she needed the protection of members of the JMPD and SAPS,” says Martin.

“Councillor Clarke undoubtedly has violated the dignity of the most vulnerable people in our community by her high-handedness in resolving this very simple matter. At best she should have consulted the Department of Housing so that they could enforce the law regulating the occupation of old age homes. Her conduct was unbecoming and in serious conflict with the code of conduct for councillors,” continues Martin.
