Stage is set as voters roll is certified

Increase in number of voters on roll since 2009 elections.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has announced on 6 March that Chief Electoral Officer Mosotho Moepya has certified the voters roll, setting the stage for 25 390 150 voters to cast their ballots in the 7 May 2014 national and provincial elections.

The announcement comes with some interesting statistics and the province that will be most hotly contested, Gauteng, also has the most registered voters, which will make for a fierce battle at the polls.

On the 2014 voters roll there are 2 208 153 more voters (a nine per cent increase) than on the voters roll for the 2009 national and provincial elections and 7,2 million more (a 39,72 per cent increase) than were on the voters roll when it was established for the 1999 elections.

The voters roll reflects a total of 80,80 per cent of registered voters when compared to the voting-age population estimated by Statistics South Africa. In comparison, registration levels stood at 80 per cent in 1999, at 84,6 per cent in 2004 and at 84,07 per cent in 2009.
