Operations resume slowly at Harmony’s Doornkop mine

Mining company voluntarily initiates audit after accident.

Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited announced on 4 March that its Doornkop mine resumed operations from the start of the day shift on 3 March.

Disaster struck on 4 February when several miners went missing after a fire had broken out and a seismic rock fall occurred.

As per the terms of the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA), Section 54 notices were issued by the Department of Minerals and Energy (DMR), and on Tuesday 4 February the company stopped operations at Doornkop.

As from 3 March, operations slowly and gradually would resume over the next several days according to a detailed start-up plan. This follows the DMR lifting the Section 54 notices on Friday 28 February.

An extensive investigation into the events of 4 February, in terms of the provisions of the MHSA and under the direction of the DMR, has begun at the mine and is expected to continue for at least the next four weeks.

Meanwhile, an external safety audit team was appointed voluntarily by Harmony to assess and report on safety at all the company’s South African operations.
