Murky water disturbs resident

WELTEVREDEN PARK - Residents worry about potable water becoming contaminated if cracked pipe not addressed soon.

A stream next to Spring Road in Weltevreden Park has become a pain for resident Esther Greenwood, who has lived next to it for the past 30 years.

She voiced her frustration over various problems associated with the river and complained that they are never addressed.

In the latest incident, a large pipe broke in half and landed in the river.

“At first we thought it was a sewage pipe, but workers who tried to repair the pipe on 14 February pointed out that it was just a water pipe,” Greenwood said.

What bothers Greenwood most is that the pipe supplies fresh water to the surrounding houses and suburbs.

“The water is murky and people can not drink it. It is murky and flies always hover above the water. The pipe is still in the water and Johannesburg Water needs to repair it.”

Ward 126 councillor Mike Tonkin criticised Joburg Water for not attending to the damaged pipe.

“It is Johannesburg Water’s responsibility to ensure that residents in the greater Joburg area have clean drinking water.”

No comment from Johannesburg Water was forthcoming at time of going to print.
