Councillor applauds roads agency

WELTEVREDEN PARK - Councillor pleased with resurfaced road

Ward 87 councillor Ingrid Reinten expressed her satisfaction with the recent tarring of road carried out by the Johannesburg Roads Agency on Cornelius Street in Weltevreden Park.

According to Reinten, fixing this road was a top priority. She said she had been at loggerheads with the agency because the road’s condition had deteriorated over the month.

“This is a very busy road because it leads to two of the main roads in the area, JG Strydom and Hendrik Potgieter roads.” There are three churches and two primary schools on the road as well.

She is pleased the road was entirely tarred, instead of the usual patching done by the agency. “They patch one small pothole, it rains once and after that the street is filled with potholes.”

Agency spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers said it costs R300 per square metre to fix one single pothole and explained it’s not always possible for them to tar the whole road. “We just finished the technical assessment of all roads. Visual Conditions Assessment (VCA) determines which roads need to be resurfaced and which ones need to be patched. Resurfacing will be done to identify roads as the budget is allocated.”

She explained that two methods are used when patching. “We use cold asphalt (tar) as an interim solution just to secure the area for road users and a permanent patch is made with hot asphalt mix, which lasts longer.”

Peters-Scheepers said the road agency has a turnaround time of three days to fix potholes after being reported.
