How to cheat crime

Security suggests following basic safety rules.

Roodepoort — Sticking to basic safety guidelines could decrease your chances of becoming the next victim of crime.

This according to Security In Practice (SIP) – a community anti-crime initiative.

According to Louis Grobler from SIP, “Keeping to simple rules such as locking a security gate after you entered the door or staying in contact with your neighbours on a regular basis could make it just that little bit more difficult for criminals to target you”.

SIP also suggests that the public should take responsibility of making sure that certain emergency factors are in place. Something like having a first-aid kit around could help save a life.

Here are some of the handy tips:

• Ensure that your driveway is brightly illuminated at night.

• Keep security gates locked when doors are left open.

• Make sure that all gates and locks work properly.

• Only put the trolley bins out the morning of pick-up day.

• Make sure your address number is displayed clearly.

• Test your security system monthly.

• Exchange contact details with your neighbours.

• Make an inventory of your valuable possessions.

• Keep all contact and emergency numbers at hand.

• Keep a complete set of keys and remotes with a trusted friend or family member.

• Always have a first-aid kit in your home.

• Ensure that your fire-fighting equipment is adequate and in working order.
