EMS arrive one hour after emergency call

Fire extinguished by neighbours without the help of Joburg EMS.

This morning the Mthembu household’s routine was disrupted when they discovered a fire blazing from the younger children’s bedroom.

Smoke billowed from the house as neighbours and family rushed put out the flames; however, Joburg EMS did not act with the same urgency.

A neighbour complained to the Record that their mission to get an emergency vehicle sent to the premises took around an hour.

For nearly 20 minutes during the emergency Ivette Dembskey was referred to different departments or numbers.

See the print edition of the Record on Friday 28 February for the full report.
