Local band turns global trend into a good deed

Musicians encourage fans to open their hearts.

Roodepoort-based band, The Morning After, challenged fellow musicians at their gig at Acoustic Café in Randpark Ridge on 8 February to collect canned food for charity as part of their #NekNomination.

#Neknomination is a trend that has swept the globe, especially in the UK, and it took a creative South African to change the now familiar game to a positive activity.

The original game calls on participants to down a drink while taking part in a dangerous activity, and then via a recorded video of their act on social media, nominate two friends to do the same within 24 hours. SA’s Brent Lindeque changed the face of the game by giving food to the homeless, and carrying on the cause by nominating two people.

The band decided also to pay it forward, and requested their fans to bring canned food along to their gig on Saturday. They urged everyone to drop off canned food at Acoustic Café until the end of March, when it will be donated to the Umbuyisa School of Arts and Culture.

The Morning After’s Gerhard Oosthuizen, Dirk Klut and Shannon Sutherland challenged fellow South African musicians, The Graeme Watkins Project, Daniel Baron and Connell Cruise to do the same at their upcoming gigs and to pay it forward with their #NekNomination. The video can be viewed on their facebook page.

They welcome the public’s participation in collecting canned food for those less fortunate. Drop-offs can be made at Trinity Village shopping centre, Acoustic Cafe, 36 Knoppiesdoring Road, 2194.
