Len Rutter Park run down

Beloved park going to the dogs.

The Len Rutter Park in Florida is loved by both runners and walkers as well as those who just enjoy a bit of nature in the middle of the city. However, users of the park now are up in arms.

The pathways have been cut for the first time since October 2013 and this only after a special request. The driver of the tractor mower, however just drives over the rubbish and litter, causing an even bigger mess without clearing it. It has been reported that people dump dead pets in the park, which causes a stench. Squatters also have invaded the park and lapa. Often there is sexual activity in the park and the reminders are to be seen everywhere. It also seems to be a popular spot for people to indulge in drugs.

Here are some of the suggestions to improve the park:

• Assign a team of full-time cleaners and a small maintenance team to the park

• Pikitup is to place the dustbins in other spots

• Clean up the lapa

• Clean up the polluted stream that flows to Florida Lake

• Rebuild the dam wall

• Reintroduce ducks into the dam

• Clean up and maintain kiddies playground

• Involve local schools in environmental projects

The Record is awaiting comment from City Parks.
