More potholes than tar

AMOROSA - Van Bergen Street or ‘Van Pothole Street?

Van Bergen Street in Amorosa is under strain. Riddled with potholes and cracks, it is evident the short stretch is not made for heavy use.

The street saw an increase in traffic when Vieira Road was closed off and residents needed an alternative route to get to Doreen Road.

“There are more potholes than actual road,” said Amorosa resident Nic Smith. “The entire stretch from Flora Haase Road to Vieira Road needs to be tarred over before it causes a serious accident.”

Smith’s wife Willemien knocked her car’s side mirror off when she swerved to dodge a pothole and hit a rubbish bin. “Is Joburg Roads Agency liable for these damages?” she asked.

Another resident, Yolandi Theunissen is ashamed of the state of the road. “I know it isn’t a massive piece of road, but it is an embarrassment to invite people to your house when they can barely use one side of the road due to [the number] and size of potholes.”

Johannesburg Roads Agency spokesperson, Bertha Peters-Scheepers has responded by stating that the agency is aware of the potholes.

“The teams in the operational area are currently busy with potholes in Van Dalen and other roads in the surrounds,” she said. “Once they have completed this work, they will fix and patch the potholes in Amarosa.”

She encouraged residents to report road and storm water issues to the agency.
