Great start for author Carlyle Labuschagne

Author Carlyle Labuschagne kicked off 2014 with an award and a promising future project.

Local author Carlyle Labuschagne is starting 2014 on a high note, Cathy Grosvenor of Allycats PR told the Record on Thursday 23 January.

Her second novel, Evanescent (part of the Broken series) won the Young Adult and Teen Readers (YATR) literary award for the best sci-fi book in 2013.

The Record interviewed Florida Hills resident Carlyle in August 2013 just after she had released Evanescent. She told the journalist about her international project called Help Build a Library in Africa.

Ever-passionate about promoting literacy, Carlyle will launch a second project in February with the aim to get the youth reading and writing.

“Through a series of creative writing tests, she will select ten of the best students (between the ages of 12 and 14) to write a short novel,” Cathy said.

The remaining ten students will receive mentoring from her and other experts. She will pilot the project at Avalon Private School, of which Carlyle says, “It might be a private institution, but is a young institution with great needs and a great passion for education”.

The first prize includes an eBook publishing package, formatting of the manuscript into various eBook formats, editing services, a cover design and publicity support.

“Her other dreams include to launch an indie book festival in Johannesburg in early 2015,” said Cathy.

Carlyle hopes to touch people’s lives, saying, “I want to help people love their differences and one another”.
