From ‘white house’ to no house

WELTEVREDEN PARK - Residents sleep easy as problem house now a pile of rubble

A house on Rugby Street in Weltevreden Park dubbed the ‘white house’ by residents living nearby is no longer a concern.

Residents sighed with relief as the house, which had been regarded as a major agitation, was demolished.

According to Sector 2 Community Policing Forum chairperson Neville Burnette, the demolition of the house was a terrific achievement. It is not yet clear as to who was responsible for the demolition, but the Northsider understands that there are plans to build a filling station in its place. “This was really a pleasant surprise for us, the house had been on our problem list as a sector for too long,” Burnette said.

According to Burnette the house was overcrowded. “There were more than 30 people living in there.” Concerns also centred around suspected drug dealers and it was reported that last year a murder took place on the premises.

Honeydew police spokesperson Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs said the police were happy with the development. “This is huge step in fighting crime in our suburbs, it’s good riddance indeed.”
