Princess Pimary believe they can fly

Watch a local school lip sing R. Kelly's 'I Believe I Can Fly'.

Princess Primary School has taken publicity to a whole new level following the filming of an interesting music video that involves lip singing and dancing.

The music video – released on YouTube in December 2013 – involves teachers, staff and pupils lip singing to I Believe I Can Fly, performed originally by the famous American R&B singer, R. Kelly.

Filming took place on the last day of school and took three hours, followed by another nine hours of editing. Since its release on YouTube it has received more than 330 views. The reason behind the music video, according to director Richard van Schalkwyk, is “pure fun” and “to get the school’s name out there”.

Richard, who is involved in filming part-time explains, “I always have wanted to do something like this for a South African school, and will certainly do it again. The idea came after I had spent 12 years in the USA where the colleges do these type of things. I then thought why not pitch such an idea to a school in South Africa?

“The principal of Princess Primary was very eager and excited about the idea. He then chose the song by R. Kelly, but besides the publicity, it’s a great way to get your school’s name out there, bring pupils and teachers together as well as improve the morale of the school. This specific song says that Princess Primary can achieve more, which is very uplifting”.

Richard added that, “The whole idea is to show pupils that school is more about the serious stuff like attending class, but also it is fun. It is clear in the video that everyone enjoys themselves, which is uplifting. It also has that touch of humour to it and one of the funniest videos I had the pleasure of making.

“To the best of my knowledge, they are also the first school in South Africa to do a video like this”.
