After obtaining a fine arts degree in New York from Columbia University in 1979, Serote spent time in Botswana as a cadre for Umkhonto weSizwe and was instrumental in setting up the Medu Arts Ensemble.

This celebrated South African author and poet received of the 1993 Noma Award for Publishing in Africa and the Pablo Neruda Award from the Chilean government in 1994. In 2012 Serote also won the prestigious Golden Wreath Award, which is betowed each year as a lifetime achievement in the field of poetry.
