Community rallies together for stray dog

Animal lovers open their hearts.

For eight months the residents living around Florida Lake have noticed a stray cross-breed female dog (bitch) roaming around looking for food and shelter.

One resident, Sarette Vos even drove around with food in her bakkie in case she saw the dog. On a few occassions she tried to catch the dog but it was too bewildered. Vos named the dog Lake Lucy Brown.

In the meanwhile the dog made Singwedzi Flats her home where the people took care of her and gave her food.

Then about two weeks ago Vos noticed that the dog has fallen pregnant and realised that she had to rescue the animal. She contacted a veterinarian from Witpoortjie and asked for tablets they can put in the dogs food to make her fall asleep and therefore make the rescue operation easier.

They got a rescue team together, consisting of her husband Jerry Pike, Janie Sauer and Quiton Wolfaart.

On Friday 3 January they approached the residents to let them know when the dog arrives but only got their opportunity on the Sunday. Joined by another resident and a professional from a dog training academy, they finally tricked the dog and was able to catch her.

The dog was taken to the veterinarian where she stayed overnight. She also received her shots, was dewormed and had a general health check up.

Vos said that they considered aborting the pups but no one had the heart for this.

Currently the dog is being kept at Vos’ sister’ law practice where there is a beautiful garden and safe area to give birth.

Lake Lucy Brown will give birth in seven days and anybody interested in pups can contact Vos on 082 373 3213.
