Police hunt killers

WELTEVREDEN PARK - Search launched after man shot dead while in his car.

Honeydew police are looking for the killers of a foreign national who was shot dead in Weltevreden Park on Sunday 5 January.

The deceased (24) whose identity is known to the police, was shot while sitting in his white Toyota Yaris in Mosterboom Street. Eyewitnesses reported that at the time of the shooting, the vehicle was stationary.

According to Panorama Residents Association chairperson Jon Rosenberg, the incident occurred at about 10.15am. “We heard about five gunshots that were followed by the screeching sound of tyres and a car speeding off.”

Rosenberg’s home is on the corner of Moosterboom Street and due to its location he did not see anything. However he received a call from a neighbour informing him of the shooting.

Before arriving at the scene, Rosenberg called the Honeydew Sector 2 policing vehicle and the control room of security company Beagle Watch. “I must commend both of them [police and security company] on the speed at which they reacted,” Rosenberg said. “By the time I arrived [at the scene] the sector police vehicle as well as three Beagle cars were there.”

The emergency services arrived and declared the man dead. “Thereafter it became a typical police scene with detectives, a member of the Hawks, a photographer, and the fingerprint division doing the necessary. Once their initial investigations were completed and the body removed, the car was handed over to a family member of the deceased, and everyone left the scene.”

Honeydew police spokesperson Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs stated an inquest docket had been opened and the incident will be investigated. She added that police found what they think are drugs in the deceased’s vehicle.

Details: Honeydew police 011 801 8614, Jon Rosenberg 082 450 2305.
