The Hindu festival of Kaarthigai Deepam

During the month of Karthigai, Hindus celebrate Shiva's manifestation as a pillar of fire

In Hindu culture, Lord Shiva is regarded as the supreme god. He is believed to be the creator, preserver, destroyer, revealer and concealer of all things.

He appeared in many forms, including the five elements. “Kaarthigai Deepam, a festival taking place during the month of Karthigai according to the Tamil calendar (mid-November to mid-December), celebrates his appearance in the form of fire,” says Lushendren Pather, president of the Melrose Hindu Temple in Abbotsford.

The festival is observed in both homes and temples. The deity is lit inside the temple and the flame is transferred to a structure outside. “We build a structure from dry grass and bamboo. Once the structure is lit, a column of fire appears, according to the way in which Lord Shiva appeared.”

Shiva is known as the “Auspicious One,” “The Great god,” and “The Simple god,” – names which attribute him as being the most notable and powerful deity. His appearance as a pillar of fire, therefore, is regarded as one of his most commanding manifestations, serving to reiterate his supremacy and dominance.
