Save the date

JOBURG – Today’s date is the last made up of three consecutive numbers this century.

The short form of today’s date, 11/12/13, is a quirky date on the calendar, and the last of the consecutive dates this century.

Some readers may find this information more interesting than others. One man has made it his life’s work to inform people of such unique dates.

Ron Gordon started the trend of spotting quirky dates more than 30 years ago, when the American science teacher wrote out a cheque on 9 September 1981. He coined Square Root Day, as 9 times 9, or nine squared, is 81.

He called up a few journalists who found his concept very novel. Since then, Gordon has made the world aware of “odd days” (1/3/5, 3/5/07, 9/11/13) and “once upon a days” like 10/10/10, 11/11/11, 12/12/12 and 11/12/13.

Now 68 years old, Gordon still keeps at it because he says it makes people smile.

“It’s cute. Once I know people like it, I have to tell more people,” he said.

“It’s a compulsion, but a good compulsion.”
