Hundreds bid farewell

The dreary weather on Friday morning reflected the sombre mood of the hordes of people who flocked to Nelson Mandela Square to pay their final respects to South Africa’s hero.

Hundreds of people went to the iconic statue of the former statesman in Sandton to leave flowers, notes of condolences and candles following news of his death.

Many people also remembered the country’s icon by taking pictures at the feet of the statue.

For many, the news of Mandela’s death was shocking despite his prolonged illness. Others believed that as he united the country during his life, so too he is uniting the country in death.

Uvesh Gajoo said, “We stand united as a nation because of the efforts, leadership and courage that was displayed by this great man. He dared to challenge injustice and through adversity and determination he was able to see his dream realised. He was the father of our great nation and will sorely be missed.”

Donovan Govender said, “As a South African I am deeply saddened to know that Nelson Mandela is no more. He was truly a father to us all. However, the legacy that he leaves behind allows me to have continued hope as not only a South African but as a person as well. He will live forever in our hearts, minds and actions.”

A group of nearly 50 City of Johannesburg employees marched from their building in Sandton’s Friedman Drive to Nelson Mandela Square, singing songs and chanting Mandela’s name.

The group observed a moment of silence for Mandela before saying a prayer and singing the national anthem.

Bystanders in the square joined them in singing the national anthem, while a wreath was placed among dozens of floral arrangements near Mandela’s statue.

A strong security presence ensured that the growing crowds were controlled.
