Laughter, the best medicine

Laughter coach Ute shares her love of people and laughter

It is almost the season to be jolly and what better way to de-stress than with a good, healthy chuckle… perhaps these one-liners will get you in the spirit.

Q: Why do blondes need clear lunch boxes?

A: So they can tell if they’re going to work, or going back home.

Q: What do you call a hundred blondes stacked on top of each other?

A: An air-mattress.

According to laughter coach Ute Frauen, a member of the Roodepoort Chamber of Commerce and a Sundowner resident, the health benefits of laughter are endless.

“It helps to relieve stress by helping you to breathe better, thereby supplying your blood with more oxygen.”

Laughter therapy involves a number of exercises which can include:

  • An air kiss laughter greeting: Kiss the air three or four times a few inches away one from another and laugh as you do so.
  • Army salute laughter: Raise your right hand sharply and slightly to the right of your right eye. Keep your fingers and thumb joined. Laugh as you salute.
  • Asian greeting laughter: Hold your hands by your side, laugh as you bend forward and greet others.
  • Confetti greeting laughter: Laugh and make joyful movements as you throw around lots of imaginary confetti.
  • Happy laughter greeting: Think about the happiest person you know. How would they laugh? How would they feel?

“My laughter training revolves around teaching people how to laugh for no reason. When you laugh, you instantly feel good. The endorphins that are released allow your muscles to relax and stress is immediately alleviated,” explained Frauen.

Frauen is looking for corporate sponsors to aid her in taking her laughter workshops to where it’s needed most, such as children’s homes and hospitals.
