Final fun at Florida Toastmasters

The last meeting of the year was celebrated with a dinner and funky 70s theme.

The last of the year’s laughs, fun, speeches and food was enjoyed at Florida Toastmaster’s year-end function at the Huguenot Restaurant in Flora Centre on Tuesday evening 3 December.

The final meeting held to a 70s theme for which some members dressed up, and Toastmaster Michael Glencross entertained the audience with fun facts and comparisons between the 70s era and now. While club public relations officer Dawn Hemming rocked the Sandy look from the famous movie Grease, member Margaret Roodt and her husband Ras were announced the best-dressed couple as a rock-and-roll Elvis and Priscilla Presley.

Two members delivered the final speeches for the year after which table topics were assigned – this gives random members the opportunity to give an impromptu speech on a topic that they were assigned minutes before. After Cynthia Seemane explained to the crowd that “you should feel the fear and go on anyway”, hippie-dressed Mark van Vuuren delivered an informative speech about the composition of a good photograph.

When table topics were announced, Barry Nelson was asked to talk about Charlie’s Angels, the hit 70s television series, as Robert de Kramer had to explain why he thought sportsman Mark Spitz was selfish. Aubrey Govere had to share his memories of the first disco he attended and finally, Cleone Carter-Smith asked Elvis why he didn’t pick her as his soul mate.

The entire room roared with laughter as she improvised and addressed Ras Elvis Roodt in her speech. Her speech was declared the best of the table topics.

A three-course meal strung the night together and many social photographs marked the last of the Toastmasters 2013 year.

The next meeting is to be held on 14 January at the Huguenot Restaurant in Flora Centre.
