Safety in numbers this festive season

Be part of the solution, asks Helderkloof Neighbourhood Watch.

December is around the corner but as festivities increase so does crime.

The Record spoke to a representative of the Helderkloof Neighbourhood Watch (HKNW) who asked to stay anonymous.

“We are alarmed about the recent spate of housebreakings in Helderkruin. Eleven in total and mostly at the upper end of the neighbourhood,” says the member.

“It is definitely a case of them targeting a specific area,” she warns.

According to the HKNW the solution lies in more residents joining the watch.

“You may have noticed that the Helderkloof Neighbourhood Watch has become very active lately. We have had regular ‘blitz’ patrols at all times of the day and night. The SAPS, Dowry, Dunmar and Apcam and members from Helderkruin and Kloofendal are determined to stamp out crime in this area. Recent spikes in house break-ins and car thefts in the area have resulted in the police, security companies and residents working together to eradicate crime. December holidays are coming up and crime always increases at this time,” explains this pillar of the community.

“Don’t be an ostrich. Know which crimes are taking place and where. Do you know which of your neighbours have been robbed or hijacked? Make sure the criminals are not watching your house. Join forces with us and be the eyes of the police,” she asks.

For R50 per month residents of Helderkruin an Kloofendal get an HKNW sign on their gate, direct contact with the SAPS, daily updates on crime in the area and dedicated patrolling of their property. Partaking in patrolling is optional and reimbursed.
