Flames at Clearwater Mall

Power outage results in fire

A fire broke out in Woolworths at Clearwater Mall on 18 November at approximately 4.30pm. Allegedly, a generator caught alight after a power outage.

“We received a call that there was a fire, came straight down and tried to extinguish it as much as we could,” said Gareth Cairns, head of security at Clearwater Mall. “I then got in touch with the fire brigade which arrived in about 30 minutes.”

The fire was fed by lead and diesel, both of which sustain the generator. According to the mall’s general manager Vicky Vlok, it is still uncertain as to what caused the fire, but stated an investigation was underway.

“I was standing by the boom, when suddenly there was a loud explosion and I saw flames flaming at the back of Woolworths in the parking lot. People started running everywhere,” said bystander Ruan Rautenbach.

The flames consumed the generator and it took the fire brigade roughly 45 minutes to extinguish the fire.
