SANBS cautions motorists

SANBS had a very successful September Blood Drive and cautions motorists during the Festive Season.

After their very successful September Blood Drive, the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) and their blood drive partner Tiger Wheel & Tyre would like to caution motorists during the Festive Season.

According to Leanne Tuttelberg of Tiauto’s press release, an amazing 31 289 people donated blood during the September Blood Drive.

“Approximately one unit of blood (480 mililitres) was donated by each donor.

“Each unit donated has the potential to save up to three lives,” she stated.

That would mean that approximately 15 018 litres of blood were donated, which potentially can save up to 93 867 people in need of a blood transfusion.

“When viewed in this light, it is quite remarkable how great a difference this blood drive can make,” Joe du Plooy, group marketing executive of Tiauto, stated.

“Making a difference is exactly why Tiger Wheel & Tyre has been a long-term supporter of the SANBS and a proud partner of this annual blood drive.”

Considering the recent wet roads and the many accidents that followed, Du Plooy wants to caution motorists during the frantic Festive Season.

“I want to appeal to all South African motorists to drive extra cautiously and courteously this Festive Season.

“Yes, it is great that we have the extra blood supplies on hand, but it would be greater still if they hardly were needed at all for road accident victims this year.”

Although the September Blood Drive is officially over, the SANBS is regularly in need of blood donations. To find out how and where you can donate blood, make a difference and save lives, visit the SANBS website at www.sanbs.org.za.
