Silverstar Casino was the proud host of both the Roodepoort Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Rocci) and their Business of the Year nominees on Thursday 10 October.
A cocktail event was held in honour of those companies that made it to the nominees list for the Business of the Year 2013 title. Comedian Nadiem Solomon was the master of ceremonies. He had the audience in stitches as he shared jokes about Eldorado Park and his recent trip to India.
Gerrie van Biljon from Business Partners delivered the opening address, arguing that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) carry the economy in a country like South Africa.
“The South African Economy did not skip the global crisis. But there are small businesses, with people like you, that rise above these crises and find different opportunities for your entities. Make sure you are here tomorrow; the country needs you.
“See these nominee certificates as an accomplishment, yes, but also let it inspire you to be Business of the Year in the year or years to come.”
Later the extremely talented beatboxing artist Morgan Beatbox amazed the crowds with what he claims to be “two voice boxes” in performing different musical genres as all the usual instruments. His mouth played the parts of drums, bass, guitar, rhythm and singer as he told a story about his struggle to get into a club one night. Morgan mimicked the sounds of doors opening and vinyl records scratching, as the crowd cheered him.
Although she called it “a lot of work”, Rocci media liaison Lillian Mathlaku said she was extremely proud of what the 118 nominated companies achieved since the previous Business of the Year awards were held.
Cansa representative Ronél Vermaak was bursting with pride when she received the Cansa nominee certificate on stage.
The Rocci Business of the Year Awards ceremony will take place on 26 October.
