Donate old car seats to save lives with 94.7 Breakfast Xpress

Campaign to keep children safe on our roads

The 94.7 Ground Patrol, aided by the Imperial I-Pledge Team, was at Hillfox Value Market on 3 October to collect second-hand car seats as part of the Breakfast Xpress’ Car Seats for Kids campaign.

The aim is to collect more than 1500 used and unwanted car seats, which will be refurbished and sterilised. They will then be given to parents who can’t afford to strap their infants and toddlers in safely when travelling by car.

Often when stuck in morning traffic, people notice children bouncing around the backseat of a moving vehicle. Sadly, it’s children like these that end up becoming statistics in the yearly Road Death Toll, after being flung through car windows during accidents.

The Arrive Alive campaign has stated that strapping infants in car seats when commuting, as well as ensuring older children are wearing seatbelts, decreases the chances of death during an accident by 40-50%.

Do these parents, who let their children roam freely within a moving vehicle, know that they are breaking the law? The National Road acts stipulates that by law, infants are to be strapped securely into car seats, and larger children must use seat belts, firmly clipped in, preferably in the back seat.

Speeding kills. Seat belts save lives. Treasure the lives of your children by strapping them in and driving responsibly.
