Biker dies following horrific crash with bakkie

Speedometer of bike found locked at 170km/h.

A collision between a bakkie and motorcycle claimed the life of yet another biker on Wednesday afternoon, 25 September.

Vanessa Jackson, ER24’s crisis communicator says, “A man in his 40s was killed while a woman suffered moderate injuries after a bike and bakkie collided at the corner of Wilgerood Road and Ruhamah Drive in Roodepoort”.

“The force of the impact between the two vehicles was so excessive that the bakkie overturned.

“When paramedics arrived on scene they found the man in his 40s injured and they initiated resuscitation efforts in an attempt to revive him. However, there was no change in his condition despite their efforts and they had no other option but to declare the man dead on scene.

“The woman who had been the only occupant of the bakkie, had been ejected partially from the vehicle as it overturned and a part of her body was trapped between the tar and the vehicle.

“Paramedics and rescuers together lifted the vehicle after which she was removed safely. She was in a stable condition and transported by ambulance to Life Flora Hospital under Advanced Life Support care.

“At this time it is not known who was at fault in causing this fatal collision. Local investigators attended the scene and will gather all the necessary details pertaining to the cause of the crash.”

According to an eyewitness, Sakkie Botha, “The biker attempted to cross the intersection probably thinking he would make it because the traffic light was still yellow”.

At the scene the Record also found the speedometer locked at 170km/h.

Also on the scene to assist were various tow truck drivers, security services, Netcare 911 paramedics as well as Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and Joburg EMS members.
