Biker dies following horror crash with bakkie

Speedometer locked at 170km/h.

A collision between a bakkie and motorbike claimed the life of yet another biker on Wednesday afternoon, 25 September.

According to ER24’s crisis communicator, Vanessa Jackson, “A man in his 40’s has been killed while a woman has suffered moderate injuries after a bike and bakkie collided with one another at the corner of Wilgerood Road and Ruhamah Drive in Roodepoort”.

“The force of impact between the two vehicles was so excessive that the bakkie overturned.

“When paramedics arrived on scene they found the man in his 40’s extensively injured and they initiated resuscitation efforts in an attempt to revive the man. There was however no change in his condition despite their efforts and they had no other option but to declare the man dead on scene.

“The woman who had been the only occupant of the bakkie, had been partially ejected from the vehicle as it overturned and part of her body lay trapped between the tar and the vehicle.

“Paramedics and rescuers immediately came together and lifted the vehicle after which she was safely removed. She was fortunate to have come away from the collision in a stable condition and she was transported by ambulance to Life Flora Hospital under Advanced Life Support care.

“At this time it is not known as to who was at fault in the cause of this fatal collision. Local investigators attended the scene and will determine all necessary details pertaining to the cause of the crash”.

According to an eyewitness, Sakkie Botha, “The biker attempted to cross the intersection probably thinking he would make it because the traffic light was still yellow”.

At the scene the Record also found the speedometer which was locked at 170km/h.

Also on the scene to assist were various tow truck drivers, security services, Netcare 911 paramedics as well as Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and Joburg EMS authorities.
