Botanical Gardens a West Rand gem

Music in the garden at Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens

Music lovers attended the final installment of Old Mutual’s Music in the Gardens series, which took place on 5 September at the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens. It was a jam-packed event that attracted young and old alike.

Last year’s Idols finalist Sindi Nene was the curtain raiser, performing songs from her new album, which is expected to be released next year.

Afro-pop trio Mafikizolo had the crowd on their feet throughout their entire set, with fans rocking to songs from their new album as well as their no.1 hit Ndi hamba nawe.

The Gardens’ curator Thompson Mutshinyalo said the use of the Gardens by the public has grown significantly. In the early 90s the Gardens received 27 000 visitors a year. Now, that figure has grown to 220 000. “Without any doubt the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens is a jewel for the West Rand.”

The garden is in the top five of the most visited eco- and educational tourism destinations in Johannesburg. “As our slogan says, we are ‘nature’s best kept secret’. It is indeed a beautiful hidden treasure”, said Mutshinyalo.
