Nonchalant robbery at Witpoortjie Spar

Goods worth R800 were stolen casually from the Witpoortjie Spar on Wednesday.

Spar employees were dismayed at the loss of R800 worth of goods in a nonchalant robbery on the afternoon of Wednesday 28 August.

The Witpoortjie Spar was robbed casually at 1.40pm by a group of women with large handbags.

Spar employee Norma Deysel told the Record that, as far as she could gather, four women and one man were in cahoots in the robbery.

“The women who all carried large handbags took Spar baskets and strolled around as a distraction while one of them stuffed her handbag with goods.

“The man was the getaway driver.”

Employee Christa Coetzer suspected foul play and cornered the one woman as she was walking out of the door, demanding to see her handbag.

“She must have known I suspected her, because the handbag was empty by the time I searched it.

“The other three women and the man got in the vehicle and drove off, leaving her there.

Coetzer says that one woman even laid down flat in the car so as not to be recognised.

Deysel calculated the gross worth of the items they got away with to be around R800. Three Spar baskets were filled with other goods but were left behind.

“If they managed to get away with those as well, the total would have been around R1 700 in stolen goods.

“Besides stealing Grandpa powder, the other goods were all baby related.”

Deysel believes that they are experienced robbers.

“We will be pressing charges but I feel that it might be useless doing so,” Deysel said as she referred to a previous incident which she reported and spent a full day in court for. The suspect never showed up for the court appearance.

“They’re not being locked up and as we speak; I’m sure they’re picking out their next target.”

By 3pm the Roodepoort police have not showed up to take staff statements of the incident.
