Maimane not buying e-tag

"I am not a hypocrite," says Maimane.

On 31 July local resident and national spokesperson for the DA, Mmusi Maimane announced his candidacy for the DA’s Gauteng Premier position.

One of the issues he raised in his speech was that if elected he would fight the e-tolling system.

“I do not have one and will not get one,” Maimane said in his speech about e-tags.

The Record contacted Maimane to find out more about his statement.

“I would be hypocritical if I bought an e-tag. I am totally opposed to the tolling system. I will never encourage citizens to break the law, ” said Maimane in the telephonic interview.

“At the moment though it is not written into law and we will keep on appealing it. It is unfair that a law like this must be forced down onto the residents of Gauteng,” explained Maimane.

The Record asked him if he was encouraging the public actively to follow his example and not buy e-tags.

“No, but I am encouraging the public who oppose the system to keep on exhausting the avenues available to them,” he concluded.
