City of Joburg vehicle causes collision

An official City of Johannesburg vehicle collides with resident, accuses him of speeding.

An official City of Johannesburg vehicle is alleged to have caused an accident in Witpoortjie on the early afternoon of Wednesday 31 July.

Nobody was injured in the incident.

At the corner of Corlett Avenue and Ham Street, a City of Joburg (CoJ) Administration vehicle collided with a maroon Mercedes-Benz after a truck obstructed its view. The accident occurred around 11.30am and JMPD officers arrived at 12.05pm. One of ER24’s Help24 vehicles was on scene and bystanders explained how the accident occurred.

The driver of the CoJ vehicle, Gabriel Mutsharini alleges that the elderly man in the Mercedes was speeding down Corlett Avenue when he was trying to turn into Corlett Avenue from Ham Street.

“I did not see the vehicle coming as the JRA truck was obstructing my view.

“The other man’s vehicle lost control, which tells me he was speeding before we collided.”

According to both drivers and eyewitnesses, a Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) truck was parked on Corlett Avenue just before Ham Street in the direction of South Road, obstructing the view of traffic from both sides. The JRA had just finished mending a pothole on Corlett Avenue and left the scene before the Record’s arrival.

The driver of the Mercedes and his son plan on claiming damages from the parties involved, they told the Record.

“My father came down Corlett Avenue from the bridge and the other car ran the stop street [sic].

“The truck must have blocked his view of the busy road,” the son said.

There is no evidence in the Record’s possession to support the claims of speeding.
