CBD again victim of power outages

Vandalism and cable theft to blame.

Vandalism and cable theft once again is to blame as residents in the Roodepoort CBD experienced power outages this past weekend.

On Monday morning 15 July the Record received a number of complaints from concerned residents, saying that the area was without power and that they are “sick and tired” of cable thieves.

Ward 84 Councillor Marianne Kemp said to the Record on the same day, “City Power’s Solomon Bengu explained to me that there has indeed been cable theft and vandalism incidents, which is the cause of this power disruption.

“More details will be made available soon.”

One resident told the Record, “The power was out since 1pm on Sunday 14 July and it only came back on at 7am this morning (15 July). It is not the first time that this has happened and we all know why. Criminals continuously steal copper cables and we want something to be done.”

Although the disruptions are a continuous headache for the residents of Roodepoort, the Record can report gladly that something is going to be done.

According to Kemp, “The City of Joburg is busy looking at new ways of implementing new cables, which hopefully will put a stop to cable theft”.
