Helicopter called out after man (25) is assaulted

Residents allegedly assault a 'thief', helicopter airlifts him to nearest hospital.

ER24 paramedics requested AER24 to send a helicopter unit to Hendrik Potgieter Road after a man was assaulted and left with critical injuries.

On Monday 15 June a man (25) was assaulted on Hendrik Potgieter Road by a group of people, after allegedly trying to rob a shop in Clearwater Mall.

“According to witnesses, the man was trying to rob a store in Clearwater Mall before running down to Hendrik Potgieter Road,” according ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson.

“The group chased and stopped him at the Christiaan de Wet Road intersection.

Jackson says that the man had sustained critical head injuries and that he was “placed onto life support by ER24 paramedics”.

“The assistance of AER24 was called in to airlift the patient to a nearby hospital.”

As the Record reported previously, a trend seemed to be forming where helicopters were declined for certain West Rand incidents.

“We do adhere by a certain call-out criteria by which our Chief Medical Officers are asked to authorise or decline the request.”

Jackson could not say why certain previous patients were declined to be airlifted but promised to comment at a later stage.

The Record will continue its investigation.
