Heist gang caught after shootout

Bank robbers brought to justice.

The Organised Crime Unit of the SAPS finally had a breakthrough in the Standard Bank heist that took place in Goldman Street, Florida on 14 June.

The armed suspects in the robbery got away with a large undisclosed sum of money and saw Goldman Street being closed off during peak afternoon traffic on the day.

On 1 July the gang of six hijacked a truck in Sandton. The SAPS quickly responded and a chase ensued. In Turffontein the robbers were cornered and a shootout between the suspects and the police erupted.

No one was injured. One suspect managed to flee but the other five were arrested. They were to appear in court on 9 July.

The sixth suspect was arrested in Florida on 2 July and will appear in court on 18 July.

Captain Lydia Dikolomela, spokesperson for Florida SAPS, said that they could not divulge how the police connected the men involved in the hijacking to the bank heist because it is sensitive information that will be used in court.
