More refuse woes loom

Residents must keep their rubbish for now, says Pikitup.

Residents can prepare themselves for more stink from Pikitup.

Employees at five depots (Roodepoort, Randburg, Southdale, Avalon and Norwood) are embarking on industrial action in the form of an indefinite sit-in.

According to the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) the industrial action is in protest against working conditions and especially Pikitup’s refusal to transport employees to and from work.

According to Samwu spokesperson Bafana Dube they have the support of eight depots.

The strike is in contradiction of a 5 May Labour Court order that prevented Samwu from illegal and unprotected industrial action.

Pikitup asks the public to keep their rubbish on their property while contingency plans are being made. Not all employees are striking but the service will be slower.
