Friends die on Ouklip: Good prospects end in fatal accident

"Tonight is my lucky night" – driver.

“Tonight is my lucky night.”

These were the last words the late Oosthuizen said to a friend before he and Botha left a well-known after-hours entertainment venue on Ouklip Road shortly before the accident that cost them their lives.

While an investigation surrounding the accident and their death is under way, a friend who wishes to remain anonymous told the Record what happened that night.

The friend is not sure exactly what time Botha and Oosthuizen arrived at the pub.

He says, “I go there regularly. I didn’t plan to meet them there but of course I was happy to have a few drinks with my friends when they arrived. We enjoyed ourselves and had a great time as usual.”

The friend confirms that while he was planning to go home, Oosthuizen and Botha had other plans.

“At Botha’s Golf GTI just before we left at around 1.30am Christo told me how he was going to meet up with a new girlfriend, and that it was going to be his lucky night.”

The friend confirms that before they all went their separate ways, it was Oosthuizen who got behind the wheel for some unknown reason, instead of Botha.

“It was only the next morning when I received the terrible news.”

The Record has information that the well-known after-hours entertainment venue is relatively new, and that it attracts young adults by the hundreds each and every weekend. Last rounds are served at 2am sharp to avoid trouble with neighbours and surrounding residents.

The Record is yet to set up an interview with the owners of the venue where the time of the deceased’s departure will be confirmed.
