Applications for biggest housing project in Gauteng to open

“Since 2016 it has been a core priority to ensure that we conclude this project. Despite numerous delays including the Covid-19 lockdown, we have pushed for the project to be finalised.”

Rental applications for Tshwane’s R508-million social housing project for low and middle-income earners will open from September 20.

The Marabastad social housing project will be delivered in two phases.

Tshwane mayor Randall Williams said phase 1 will consist of 691 units while phase 2 will have 509 units.

“The Marabastad Townlands housing project is progressing well, applications to open later this month,” said Williams.

On Tuesday, Williams and MMC for housing and human settlements Mpho Mehlape-Zimu conducted an oversight visit at the project.

The multi-million-rand social housing project consisting of 1 200 mixed units will be managed by city entity Housing Company Tshwane (HCT) and was expected to benefit Tshwane residents who do not qualify for government-sponsored housing or earn enough to qualify for home loans.

“During the visit I was impressed to note the great progress that had been made as the Townlands estate is now taking shape.

“It is the biggest social housing project currently being built in Gauteng.

“Since 2016, it has been a core priority to ensure that we conclude this project. Despite numerous delays including the Covid-19 lockdown, we have pushed for the project to be finalised.”

Williams said the Marabastad Townlands housing project was now close to completion.

Prospective renters have until October 1, 2021 to hand in their applications.

He said the HCT would soon release detailed information regarding the application process.

Beneficiaries of the social housing units in the CBD would be residents of Tshwane who earned between R1 500 and R15 000 per month, said mayoral spokesperson Sipho Stuurman.

The amenities at the building include a children’s playground, sporting facilities, community hall and a tuck shop.

Stuurman said the project was one of the HCT mandates to develop and deliver good affordable rental property to the community of Tshwane.

“This helps to bring the community close to the workplace within the CBD.”

Previously, Stuurman said rent at the units would range between R625 to R4 860.

“HCT will, however, advertise the project through social media, radio and newspaper platforms for pre-application forms which require no money to obtain.

“At no point will HCT require any form of money during this process until the tenant’s application is successful and a leasing agreement is presented.”

His comments came after the metro urged residents to ignore a phony message on social media asking them to “apply” to rent rooms at the flats.

“This message is a scam,” said Stuurman.
