Blankets and songs for winter

RUIMSIG - Grade 5 pupils learn important life skills by giving back to the community.

Putting the needs of others before your own needs is a very important quality that needs to be taught to children from a young age.

The residents of Residentia Ons Huis Retirement village in Florida were in for a special treat on 21 June when the Grade 5 pupils of Ruimsig Montessori Primary School visited them as part of their yearly outreach project. The principal, Janet Clarke explained that they choose a charity to support every year. “The pupils have a plan of things they want to do for the residents in each term,” said Clarke.

The pupils from the Lower and Upper Primary along with their parents made 130 warm, blue and red winter blankets for each of the residents. Clarke said that the children brought money in order for deputy principal, Sally Blake to buy the fabric needed. “The mommies cut the fabric into squares and the children threaded it,” said Clarke.

The residents who gathered in the hall were very excited and eager to make a decision between a blue or red blanket and quickly put it over their shoulders or placed it on their laps.

Seven of the Grade 5 pupils from the school came with to not only hand over the blankets, but entertain the residents with songs, instruments and puppets. For half an hour the residents had smiles on their faces as they clapped hands and sang along to familiar songs like Mama Mia and Hansie Slim.

Apart from the blankets the school also handed over pictures that pupils from the Pre-School in Ruimsig as well as the schools in Featherbrooke and Radiokop painted. Clarke said that staff from Ons Huis provided them with a list of things they need. Pictures to brighten up their home was one of these needs.
