What makes you an African?

RUIMSIG - Monash celebrate Africa day and their birthday on one very special day.

Monash South Africa had a very special day on 25 May. Not only did they celebrate Africa day, but they also celebrated their 15th birthday.

Monash welcomed pupils from Matla Combined School in Krugersdorp to be a part of the celebrations as they are part of the Monash community. The pupils contributed to Africa Day in a very special way. They danced traditional Xhosa dances, gumboots dances and recited African poems.

The day started out with speeches from two very influential people. Kojo Baffoie and Noni Gasa, each had a very inspirational message for staff and students who attended the celebrations. Baffoie is the founder of Blake Magazine and talked about what makes one an African. He added that each person needs to do their small part for the growth of Africa.

Gasa, who is the senior Public Relations Manager at Woolworths linked fashion with Africa. She touched on the subject of collaboration and named many examples of where powerful people in other parts of the world collaborated with Africans in order to create successful brands.

The messages were widely appreciated by students who added to the day with their traditional African costumes. In the square of the campus, students set up booths to showcase all the different cultures.
