RADIOKOP – Members of the management at the Wilgeheuwel hospital share breakfast with nurses to celebrate International Nurses' Day.

Passion, compassion and caring are the fundamental characteristics embraced and cherished by nurses at the Life Wilgeheuwel Hospital.

Nurses at the hospital celebrated their profession during this international Nurses’ Day with a breakfast divided into three sessions. Nurses initially recalled their pledge before the meal.

Members of the management team served nurses the breakfast as a token of appreciation to let them (nurses) feel special.

Lesley Fletcher from the Life Healthcare head office said the celebration was an opportunity to acknowledge nurses. “We have always felt that this is a noble profession that we [nurses] should be passionate about,” she said.

She explained that it was advisable for nurses to always remember why they chose to be nurses. “Some of the values of Life Healthcare are passion and lifelong learning. We give our nurses a professional development opportunity and encourage them to pursue their higher learning studies,” she said.

She concluded that they always encourage their nurses to formulate a relationship with their colleagues and patients.

The theme for this year International Nurses’ Day is Nurses: A force for Change: improving health systems resilience.

Group nursing and quality executive, Dr Sharon Vasuthevan said the celebration was an opportunity to revisit the concept of care. “This is a day that provides us with an opportunity to acknowledge our nurses. They are always there for 24 hours a day to ensure that we provide quality health care,” she said.

“We make use of our skills and resources to contribute to a resilient health system in each community where our hospitals are situated throughout the country,” she concluded.

Nursing manager Jeananne Dunsdon explained it was time for management to thank nurses. “It is not about the management, it is about them, that’s why we are giving them gift bags, breakfast and cupcakes. Just to say thank you,” she said.
