WATERFALL – Netcare Pinehaven Hospital hosts pregnancy awareness information event for expectant mothers and their families.

Netcare Pinehaven Hospital hosted a Pregnancy Awareness Information event on 19 February for Pregnancy Awareness Week. The event was attended by expectant mothers, staff and family members.

Netcare Pinehaven Hospital manager Eugene Ferreira said that the hospital hosts the event annually to raise awareness about pregnancy to expectant mothers and provide them with useful information.

“We hope everyone who is here today will have fun, learn important information about pregnancy and realise that Netcare Pinehaven Hospital is the place to be. There are doctors who will be guest speakers to encourage mothers to be more informed and consult their gynaecologists before the birth of their child,” said Ferreira.

Pediatrician Dr Ishmael Mohlabi spoke about the importance of breastfeeding as a healthy way to nuture your baby after giving birth. He spoke about the myths surrounding breastfeeding and answered expectant mothers’ questions about their concerns.

Netcare Pinehaven Hospital unit manager of maternity, labour and nursing, Anne Standing said that it is alarming how little many mothers do not know about pregnancy in general.

“I encourage mother to discuss their concerns and matters relating to their pregnancies with their gynaecologists. I have discovered most people get false information about giving birth. It is important for them to receive their information from qualified people in order to get accurate information,”said Standing.

Gynaecologist and obstetrician Dr Zanzelli Dlamini presented a PowerPoint presentation, detailing the preparation leading to childbirth and the importance of consulting a gynaecologist throughout your pregnancy. She also discussed the benefits and challenges of giving natural birth and performing a caesarean.

Guests played fun games where the winners stood a chance of winning a maternity bag filled with goodies and the main prize of two private rooms in the maternity ward. Four pregnant mothers got the opportunity to get a 4D scan of their babies and the guests also got a tour of the maternity ward.
