GALLERY AND VIDEO: Choir entertains in English and German

FLORIDA PARK – Lovers of all ages are entertained by the newly formed Mozart Choir with songs and drama.

The newly formed Mozart Choir hosted a Valentine’s concert, The Magic Whistle, at the Roodepoort Theatre  in Florida Park on 13 February.

The Basement Theatre was packed with eager couples and singletons alike, eager to listen to the soothing love songs performed by the choir. The deep voice of the narrator, Richard Beadle, quickly took the audience from the present to the past, to a time where fairy tales still existed.

The Mozart Choir is a collaboration between the Johannesburg German Choir and the ProCantare Choir as both needed more members. According to choir member Karin Spottiswoode, the musical director, Carel de Graaff was the conductor of the German Choir, while the pianist, Daniela Pretorius, came from ProCantare. One of the lead roles, the Queen of the Night, Louisa Connoly, was a former member of the German Choir and came especially from Cape Town to participate in the concert.

“I had opera training, therefore the acting comes easy to me as it is all about the delivery,” said Connoly. The story was a good mix of love, drama and humor as it followed two very different love stories. Princess Pamina longed for her true love Gert, while Don Giovanni sang to win back the heart of his one true love – the Queen of the Night. The choir got into the acting and “oohed and ahhed” along with the action on stage.

The audience was captivated by the mix of English and German music and some people even wiped away tears as solos and duets were sung.
