GALLERY: Dios Los Ninos add more animals

WILGEHEUWEL – Chinchillas, guinea pigs, little tortoises and sensory garden found at Dios Los Ninos School.

Dios Los Ninos School in Wilgeheuwel added new animals and activities to the school.

From dogs and rabbits, the school now has five guinea pigs – two adults and three babies, two chinchillas and a sensory garden.

The school principal Leonie de Kock said chinchilla, which is the softest animal in the world, is to be used for therapy.

“The sensory garden is for children to learn things through feeling and sensing them,” she said.

Children at the school interact with these animals in such an amazing way.

They visit cages and kennels every day to touch and play with these friendly animals kept in their school.

The school also adopted a one-year-old tortoise.

Dios Los Ninos caters mostly for children with special needs.

De Kock said they like doing things in an out-of-the-box way.

“We are different and we do our things differently,” she said.

According to De Kock, they have 46 children and have been making use of animals for the last nine years.

Also, the animals are always there for the children when they need comfort.

Five-month-old dog Layla is also there to assist with therapy and other educational activities.

De Kock said Layla is a special dog, especially with the children – they have a good relationship and understand each other.
